Melbourne Travel Guide

Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, and is the most southerly capital city in Australia. Its position in the far south means it has a famously changeable climate, where it’s common to experience warm sunshine and wet gales in the same hour. Melbourne has a particularly good transport network, making travel within the city easy and enjoyable. It has an extensive tram network, including the City Circle Tram which takes visitors on a free tour of the sites. 

Fun features of the city include the many animal attractions. Melbourne Zoo is Australia’s oldest zoo, and slightly outside of the city you can visit the Werribee Zoo, where you can experience an exciting overnight safari trip. Melbourne Aquarium is a three-level aquarium, with a walk-through shark tank.  

Melbourne is a haven for anyone who enjoys visits to galleries and museums. The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art shows work by artists from all over the world. The Ian Potter Museum of Art and the City Gallery both house a variety of temporary exhibitions. Museums particularly worth a visit include the moving Jewish Holocaust Museum and Australia’s largest museum, Melbourne Museum. 

There is plenty of opportunity for shopping in Melbourne. Shoppers will be able to find anything they need in Bridge Road, and Block Arcade is worth seeing just for the architecture of the arcade itself.

People wanting to enjoy the outdoors can visit one of Melbourne’s many parks and green spaces, including the World Heritage listed Carlton Gardens.
