Ten happiest countries

In 2006 researchers at the University of Leicester in Great Britain used numerous sources of data, from the CIA to UNESCO and others, to determine the geographic locations in the world with the happiest populations. Their top ten were:

Denmark
Denmark is famous for its lenient policies, including legalized drugs and prostitution, Denmark is also well-known for its relaxed and friendly pace, its lovely architecture, fine cuisine and traditional welcome to all foreign visitors.

Switzerland
Perhaps it is the chocolate, the fine cuisine, or the ever present “efficiency” of everything from their watches to vehicles, but it isn't just the natives of the country that enjoy everything “Swiss”, it is also one of the most frequently visited destinations in Europe .

Austria
Again, it may be the cuisine, the scenic beauty, the advancements of technology, but generally this country is a happy and contented place, and many visitors remark on the warm and hearty welcome they receive.

Iceland

Though a great deal of the year is spent in darkness, Iceland is becoming well known for its remarkably friendly and hospitable natives, as well as for its background of contentment and comfort – visitors enjoy everything from hot springs to culture, including the country's impressive amount of books and publications.

The Bahamas
Excellent weather, a strong economy, and beautiful surroundings contribute to the well-being of natives and visitors alike to this lovely island destination.

Finland
Undeveloped and majestic scenery, with direct access to modern life distinguishes life for a native of Finland . Visitors too remark on the beauty and yet remarkable modernity of the country, making it a popular year round destination.

Sweden

Charming towns, excellent food, expansive parks, and the home of massage, all add up to making Sweden one of the happiest locations in the world.

Bhutan
The beauty of the Himalayas would leave most inhabitants of such a location happy, but the country's governmental policies around the contentment of its citizens means that residents and visitors alike are encouraged to consider happiness over anything else.

Brunei
Oil rich Brunei is a tax free and generally wealthy land, the natives live a comfortable lifestyle and actively welcome visitors from abroad. This “secret” of the Middle East is quickly becoming a popular place to visit.

Canada
Long standing tradition points to Canadians as some of the friendliest people on the planet, and the many cities and regions are popular for travelers from around the world.
