I am not a water person but every time I’ve seen a surfing video it has worked something up in me. Was in the Gold Coast a few weeks before schoolies so I decided to take some surfing lessons so I could impress the opposite sex with my skills come the crowd. Went through a Gold Coast EGuide and found a shack right on Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise next to the big staircase thingy that leads into the beach. The guy was cool enough, but seeing as I’ve never skated, snowboarded, wake boarded, or body boarded before he said it might take me a while to pick it up.

Apparently it was maybe three lessons before I won’t look like a complete idiot so I signed up. It’s definitely a lot harder then it looks. We did some work on the beach of learning stances and learning how to balance your weight on the board before we ever got in the water. Standing on a surfboard on the sand and pretend surfing did not impress anyone but I figure its how you learn. Once in the water my first challenge was getting pass the waves. That pretty much took the entire first and half of the second lesson. There were only about 3 footers but had a lot of force and it became really frustrating.

Third lesson was a lot of trying to catch waves but never being able to do it. I think it was only till my fourth lesson did I catch a wave, I never managed to stand on the board but it was a really good feeling for the 6 seconds I was riding a wave. Fifth lesson I caught two more but wiped out pretty badly on the second so I had to call it off. I’m definitely going to continue my learnings when I’m back there next summer.
